Metung

Metung is situated between Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance within the extensive Gippsland Lakes, on a thin peninsula of land that extends into Lake King.

Metung is very much a fishing and boating town. Surrounded on three sides by water, the town is well serviced by a number of marinas and jetties, with several cruise operators catering for visitors. Safe swimming is available at Shaving Point and near the jetty along Metung's western coast.

The town centre features a general store, a number of restaurants and cafes, and several speciality shops. The Metung Hotel, which dates back to 1873, is situated within the town's commercial centre and has direct water frontage onto Bancroft Bay and the adjoining wharf.

A good way to get an overview of Metung is to walk the length of the boardwalk which hugs the town's eastern coastline. Starting in the town centre, the boardwalk extends northwards with scenic water views of Bancroft Bay and several marinas along the coast.

Take an 8 kilometre drive east of Metung along Nungurner Road, and then follow Nungurner Jetty Road to the shoreline of Lake King. This secluded oasis with a bush backdrop has a park with picnic shelters and BBQs that overlooks the water at Nungurner Jetty. There is a sandy beach area and boat ramp.
